Miss Fozzard in Alan Bennetts Talking Heads The video, Talking Heads Two was made in 1998. It is a collection of 6 dramatic monologues by various different actors, each one telling their own story. Bennett wrote a series of monologues in 1988 for BBC 2 at a eon when they were having financial difficulties. Monologues were chosen as they only required a few actors and cameramen. They were successful and Bennett decided to write a second series of monologues, the one which I am going to study is called Miss Fozzard finds her feet and I will be discussing how Alan Bennett creates her division and how her story is told. The monologues were written for, and shown on television. The use of the talking head as a dramatic device is beliefive as the audience sees the expression on the actors face and then feels the emotion the actor is portraying in their role. The effect of using the monologue form is effective as on that point is only one character so the a udience can connect and understand the character better. In the collection of monologues there are no special effects use i.e. flashbacks, distractions also helps the audience understand the character. The audience also has to use their conceit as other characters are only spoken about and not seen so the audience has to imagine what they look like. Also, as the monologues are only mountain in one scene, for example Miss Fozzards lounge, the different locations described by the characters also have to be imagined. The purpose of the monologue is to entertain, however there is a limit to which effects the producers can afford to use however, many wouldnt be used in a monol... ... tone of voices of the unseen characters used by Patricia Routledge (the actress) creates a successful character. I think her characters exterior seems boring to someone who takes a first glance, but as you get to know her throughout the monologue her character evolves into so meone interesting and funny. If I was a member of the audience I think I would find Miss Fozzard inoffensive and rather eccentric. However, I think these qualities in a person are often amusing, as we frequently find in the monologue, and her prejudice views may be at times questionable, but are mostly harmless and funny. The audience would feel that this is only due to Miss Fozzards old fashioned manner and this is what she has been brought up to think. Overall, her character is excellently created and brought to life and I enjoyed the monologue.

The most diverse of all the living things in the tropical rainforest though is the insects, there are many hundreds of thousands, and maybe even about this amount not even discovered.The diversity is also shown by the Indians of Amazonia, with their ability to use more than 1600 pharmaceutical plant extracts. This vast medical potential has only been scratched.Each year 100,000-140,000 square kilometres of forest is destroyed. In a few decades a quarter of the entire worlds store of biological species could va nish into oblivion. This deforestation brings local ruin, flooding, soil erosion and land infertility. World-wide it threatens to change climates, to accelerate global warming. And large areas of antecedent rainforest end up as tough, virtually inedible grass, of no use to man or beast-natures ecological revengeThe loss of new drugs could set up disastrous, because many of the drugs that have not been discovered could well be cures to diseases such as cancer and the common cold.The forest processes are the soil system, rainforest ecosystem and the water cycle.The soil system, where the forests trees shed their leaves and branches. There is a layer of decomposing litter on the surface of the ground. Which is followed by a thin layer of nutrient rich soil. This is where the trees roots take back up all the nutrients. If trees are removed, then the whole nutrient cycle is broken, and all of the existing nutrients are washed away, this is called leaching. Leaving the soil infertile.Th e next process is the rainforest ecosystem. This is when the precipitation (rain) falls onto the trees leaves, and the suns energy also shines down onto the leaves, this causes evaporation in water vapour. Some of the water seeps through into ground water and surface run-off. The ecosystem is also when the nutrients are recycled, as stated in the soil system.The water cycle is when all the heavy rainstorms fall down on the forests layer of trees, and is evaporated or transpirated. A lot of this is recycled through the rivers, as they carry a lot of it back to the sea.The slash and burn process is a long one. It begins with human activities, as they cut down an area of the forest by hand. Some trees are left standing to protect the soil and if they have fruit and crops growing on them, then they will be left to.The wood is then burnt, destroying the natural seeds which reduces weeding. Ash from the burnt trees is then dug into the soil to countenance fertiliser. New crops are the pl anted (e.g. yams, manioc, cassava). There is less vegetation to cover the ground, which exposes the soil, causing leaching and erosion. The yields then get less each year, in the main later 2-3 years. The farmers move on to clear a plot somewhere else, and start the whole process again.The plot in which the farmers have demolished is now abandoned. And will soon start to re-grow again, but less luxuriant, with fewer and lower species. This is called secondary growth.The ecological balance is restored after about 20 years.There are mainly 4 different other ways in which humans use the forest. (1), there is clearcutting, in which an area of the forest is completely cleared. Only valuable species are taken out and the rest are left and burned. This is a useful source of income. (2), Agroforestry, this is a farming technique that imitates the canopy and layer structure of the natural forest by planting trees as well as shorter- lived farm crops.This idea is similar to that of the Indi an forest gardens, but the area does not need to be abandoned for a fallow period. (3), this is biosphere reserve, this is a way of protecting part of the forest by leaving it untouched except for research and the collection of materials for plant reproduction etc. The protected core area is surrounded by a buffer zone in which only certain human activities are allowed. The activities permitted will cause teensy-weensy damage to the ecosystem and will stop more demanding activities invading the area. (4), trees for annual crops and timber.The forest is cleared and replaced by stands of tree crops or quick-maturing timber trees. Once the trees grow, they again translate a protective canopy. Humans also use the forest for things such as mining, drugs and research for new drugs, fruits and other forms of food.Theres lots of opinions on the rainforests. Writing Response to Freedom Writers

People spend a good portion of their lives learning. We all sit in classrooms, we observe, we listen, and while on that point is someone there for us, someone to shed light on, to teach, and to guide. There is without a doubt that teachers are an important part of a someones life, whether a child or a unexampled adult, teachers are always there. A teacher has an concern on the person a child becomes, and also the person a child strives to be. The movie granting immunity Writer is an inspiring story that throughout the film, Mrs.Erin Gruwell managed to be contrary as a commendable teacher, careless of the difficulties that surround her learning environment. She was fresh-faced, idealist and was ready to throng on the world as she steps inside Wilson High School for her first day of teaching. Her class, a diverse group of racially charged teenagers from different walks of life (African Americans, Latinos, Asians, juvenile delinquents, work party members, and underprivileged stud ents from poor neighborhoods) hopes for nothing more than to make it through the day.More and more, teachers are becoming a crucial influence in childrens lives. It stands to reason that a teachers personality and teaching style can have an impact on childrens academic slaying and general development. Mrs. Gruwell illustrated this beautifully in the film, in the beginning of the movie, her class hated each other and the understanding that they are simply being warehoused in the educational system until they are old enough to disappear. Despite her students persistent refusal to participate in class, Mrs.Gruwell tries several means to engage them on a daily basis. However, at first, Mrs. Gruwell was timid and obviously new at her job, the kids caught onto that right away and had no respect for her. To break the ice, Mrs. Gruwell wanted to connect with them and brought music in that all of them would cognize and can relate to, but that didnt do much. She took another step and moved the students seats in the classroom because they all discriminate themselves in racial groups, this definitely caused tension throughout the room and the students took it out on each other.One of the students drew an offensive picture of another student and passed it rough class, this made Mrs. Gruwell furious and explained that it starts with a drawing like this, and indeed some kid dies in a drive-by, never even knowing what hit him. She then told the students about how the Jews went through the very same thing and they are amateurs compared to the most famous gang, the Nazis. This really opened the students eyeball and they started to respect Mrs. Gruwell little by little. Mrs.Gruwell pattern one more ice breaker would be good to show them that they are all the same and to bring them together. She put a line of canal tape in the middle of the room and asked the students various questions and if it related to them they had to step on the line. One of the questions she asked was if the students knew anyone that died from gang related violence and most of the students stepped onto the line. That line correspond the students coming together because in reality they are all the same. Mrs. Gruwell literally threw her life away to help those kids out.While she was having problems with her personal life, she took on the responsibility of having three jobs to pay to give her students the best education, whether it was books, school trips and more. One of the books that she bought for her students was The Diary of Anne Frank, it would be a good idea for the students to read literature from another kind of ghetto and with these simple tools she opens her students eyes to the fancys of those suffering bigotry throughout the world and the struggles of those outside their own communities.But then reality steps in to focus when a racially motivated gang shooting witnessed by a girl in Mrs. Gruwells class became the most unsuspectingly vigorous teaching aid. It sp arked a transformation in the classroom, compelled them to listen and pressure her to take off her idealistic blinders. Knowing that every one of her students has a story to tell, Mrs. Gruwell encourages them to keep a daily journal (which she bought for them) of their thoughts and experiences.After sharing their stories with one another, the students con their shared experience for the first time and open up to the idea that there are possibilities in life outside of making it to the age of eighteen. A teacher plays a great role in developing a students character. It is very difficult, because character is formed not only in the classroom. Despite the fact, the classroom climate influenced by a teacher has a major impact on the students motivation, attitude towards learning and character development. Mrs.Gruwells students could externalize how passionate she was to see them succeed and they got more comfortable and actually wanted to learn. One of her students asked if they coul d meet with Holocaust survivors and she agreed and got them to come, however, that wasnt enough for her students, they wanted more. Mrs. Gruwell had the kids keep a letter to the woman who hid Anne Frank in the attic and the students got really excited and couldnt wait. Even after that her students wanted more, they wanted to make a difference, be heard, leave something behind and they soon did.Mrs. Gruwell made their journals that they were writing into a book ,The Freedom Writers Diary. Lastly the children who grew up in more affluent neighborhoods a good deal do better in school but the poorer the neighborhood on an average have higher crime rates, teenage pregnancy and drug abuse. Mrs. Gruwell experience verbally and visually how her students neighborhood affected them in such a degree. Surely there was nothing she could do to prevent such thing to advance but the only thing she did was to provide them respect, loyalty, dreams and trust overall. Mrs.Gruwell had faith on her students that no matter what is your social position, or education or where you grew up, what matter is you hold in respect and love and faith in those in need. She finally grew a tough skin and took charge instead of letting them walk all over her, which is how she succeeded in getting their attention. Once she got them to focus on what really mattered and to understand that each clique had some common ground, they hit the ground running and the peace was history. She successfully turned the classroom into a safe haven in the crazy high school they attended.A teacher is like a sculptor, they mold a personality out of a child like a sculptor creates a beautiful statue out of clay. So a teacher has the greatest impact on students character, knowledge, values and this affect can go on for years even after they are not in reach with one another. Being very knowledgeable will not immediately qualify as a good teacher. What is more important, is the attitude and the skill of being abl e to transfer the lessons effectively to the students. Teaching requires dedication and selflessness to be able to impart your learning and knowledge to the students.
